HCLT ANNOUNCES COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS FOR HCLT HOMEOWNERS AND RESIDENTS

On June 13th , 2024, at our Annual Membership Meeting, Houston Community Land Trust announced the establishment of two scholarships for HCLT residents. These scholarships were inspired by an HCLT homeowner who
stated that achieving her goal of homeownership motivated her to pursue other goals which included going back to school.

Dr. Jeffrey S. Lowe Academic Scholarship

The Dr. Jeffrey S. Lowe Academic Scholarship is awarded to an HCLT resident who is
enrolled at Texas Southern University. The scholarship is named after Dr. Jeffrey S.
Lowe who is an Associate Professor of Urban Planning and Environmental Policy in
the Barbara Jordan-Mickey Leland School of Public Affairs at Texas Southern
University. His research on affordable housing and community development was
vital to the establishment of the Houston Community Land Trust. Dr. Lowe was a

driving force behind the local CLT conference in 2018 and 2019 which was hosted
by the Barbara Jordan-Mickey Leland School of Public Affairs.
This award is to honor the connection that Texas Southern University has in the
foundation of the Houston Community Land Trust and the 3rd Ward Community.

Sherrod-Newport Community Leadership Award

The Sherrod-Newport Community Leadership Award is awarded to an HCLT
resident who is an undergraduate or graduate student majoring in a
public/community service-related field (i.e. Public Administration, Government,
Education, Non-Profit Management, Public Health, Social Work etc.)
The award is named after 2 pioneers of the CLT movement, Rev. Charles Sherrod
and Eugene "Gus" Newport" both of whom we lost in 2022 and 2023 respectively.
Not only did both men contribute to the development and growth of the CLT
model, but they were civil rights activist that changed their communities, cities and
made history. This scholarship will hopefully support new leaders focused on
preserving and uplifting their communities.
